CENTREVILLE, MI (WTVB) – The St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office has announced the upcoming launch of IGNITE, a merit-based educational initiative aimed at reducing recidivism and equipping inmates at the St. Joseph County Jail with critical life skills.
Standing for Inmate Growth Naturally and Intentionally Through Education, the program requires participants to actively take responsibility for their own progress as they focus on academic improvement, vocational training, and personal responsibility.
Sheriff Chad Spence said in a statement “We will continue to be tough on crime and hold people accountable for their actions,” but if someone is willing to put in the work, we should give them an opportunity to leave here better prepared than when they came in.”
To ensure the success of the initiative, the sheriff’s office is partnering with Glen Oaks Community College and Michigan Works! to deliver comprehensive classroom instruction, employment resources, and post-release opportunities.
Originally developed by Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson, IGNITE has expanded rapidly into a national model supported by the National Sheriffs’ Association.
The implementation in St. Joseph County marks the fourth jail to adopt the program in the state of Michigan and the 45th site nationwide. The educational program will officially launch at the facility on October 1.
