BATTLE CREEK, MI (WTVB) – A Calhoun County jury has found a Battle Creek man guilty of first-degree premeditated murder, felony murder, and third-offense domestic violence in connection with the brutal stabbing death of his girlfriend.
33-year-old Tommie Heard, , was convicted of the April 12, 2024, slaying of 28-year-old Morgan Schug, who was attacked inside her grandmother’s West Pitman Avenue home—a residence she had moved into seeking a safe haven from their volatile relationship.
According to police and court records, Heard, who was Schug’s on-and-off-again boyfriend, confessed to the killing after authorities apprehended him running nearby with blood on his hands.
During the fatal assault, Schug’s elderly grandmother attempted to intervene but was shoved to the ground by Heard, who later admitted to carrying a pocketknife to “scare” the victim.
Prosecutors highlighted Heard’s extensive history of domestic violence, noting four prior domestic-related convictions across multiple counties. Heard remains held without bond and is officially scheduled for sentencing on November 2, where he faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
