COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A 22-year-old Coldwater man was arrested Sunday, following an alleged assault involving two co-workers at the Burger King restaurant on Coldwater’s east side.
According to a media release from Coldwater Public Safety, officers were dispatched to the restaurant at approximately 9 p.m. after receiving a report of a fight.
Following an investigation, police arrested Austin Lawhead on a charge of aggravated assault. The alleged victim, a 46-year-old Coldwater resident, was found suffering from multiple head injuries and was transported to Insight Hospital and Medical Center Coldwater for treatment.
Police said the incident began after Lawhead, a Burger King employee, returned from break and became involved in an argument with a fellow employee at the restaurant’s front counter.
Witnesses told officers that Lawhead then jumped over the counter, struck the victim in the head with a phone and subsequently bit the victim in the face.
The incident was captured on cellphone video by a co-worker who witnessed the confrontation.
The Branch County Prosecutor’s Office has charged Lawhead with assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder.
He was scheduled to be arraigned Monday afternoon.
