STURGIS, MI (WTVB) – Sturgis Mayor Frank Perez issued a formal media release, offering a “sincere unreserved apology” following the public release of an independent investigation into the Sturgis City Commission.
In the press statement, Perez acknowledged that when faced with internal allegations earlier in the year, he allowed “frustration and confusion” to cloud his judgment. The mayor extended his apologies to fellow commissioners, city staff, his family, and local residents, while affirming that he fully accepts the investigation’s conclusions and intends to complete all required training.
The apology was prompted by the findings of an external probe conducted by the Miller Johnson law firm, which the city commission voted unanimously to release to the public late last month.
The independent investigation was originally launched in May 2026 following months of intense political turmoil, including the resignation of the City Manager and allegations from other commissioners that Perez had stepped outside proper protocols when handling complaints against a city employee.
The decision to open an investigation came after weeks of Vice Mayor Jeff Mullins and City Commissioner Aaron Miller calling for Perez to step down before attempting to remove and censure him.
Mullins and Miller alleged that Perez and other commissioners contributed to an environment that led to former City Manager Andrew Kuk’s resignation.
Investigators ultimately concluded that Perez bypassed established city charter guidelines by failing to formally report his concerns through the city attorney
