COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – As the investigation continues into the bomb threat that shut down the Branch County Courthouse on Tuesday, as Sheriff Fred Blankenship says his department is actively pursuing leads to identify the suspect behind the hoax.
According to the sheriff’s department incident began, at approximately 9:15 a.m. on Tuesday morning , when Branch County Central Dispatch received a tip reporting a possible bomb threat at the Branch County Courthouse located at 31 Division Street in downtown Coldwater.
Out of an abundance of caution and to guarantee the safety of employees, judicial personnel, and members of the public, Deputy County Administrator Jessica Miller announced the evacuation and shutdown of the complex. The sudden closure disrupted the downtown area, prompting the Branch District Library, the Coldwater Chamber of Commerce, and adjacent local businesses to adjust their operations or close entirely.
The Branch County Sheriff’s Department led a thorough sweep of the courthouse, annex, and surrounding grounds. They were assisted by Michigan State Police Sgt. Jim King, who deployed a specially trained explosives detection K-9 unit to clear the facility.
Following a comprehensive search, authorities confirmed that no explosive devices were located and there were no reported injuries. Miller announced that the building was given an “all clear” by 12:30 p.m., allowing the scheduled County Commissioners meeting to proceed at 4:30 p.m.
However, both the courthouse and the annex building remained closed to the public for the rest of the day.
The Branch County Sheriff’s Office extended its thanks to the Michigan State Police, Branch County Central Dispatch, court personnel, and all responding agencies for their swift cooperation.
Sheriff’s officials emphasized that the safety and security of courthouse staff and the public remain their top priority, noting that all reported threats are taken seriously and will be addressed accordingly as the criminal investigation moves forward.
