UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – Union City Community Schools officially launched its innovative Food Club this week, sparking an immediate and overwhelming wave of community support and revealing the need.
Sponsored by the Michigan Farm Bureau Family of Companies, the unique program operates like a small grocery store within the school district to combat hunger in the district.
Every family in the district is allocated 25 points per week to spend via the club’s website on items ranging from canned goods and cereal to fresh milk and hygiene products .
Junior Ellyse Flynn says the new initiative is much needed within the Union City community
According to senior Lauren Tundevold the response was instantaneous, with student volunteers logging more than 30 orders on the very first day

The entire initiative is structured as a “for students, by students” operation, giving teenagers hands-on business and community service experience.
Under the guidance of school staff, student volunteers handle inventory management, website updates, and order packing.
Prior to the launch, students took the lead by emailing local businesses to secure food donations and visiting local food banks to learn standard distribution procedures.
School organizers and student leaders expressed immense gratitude for the initial community turnout, noting that the rapid influx of orders proves how beneficial and necessary the program will be for local families.
The Michigan Farm Bureau Family of Companies, along with partners including the Calhoun County Farm Bureau, Branch County Farm Bureau, South Michigan Food Bank, Farm Bureau Insurance Chris Maye Agency, and End Childhood Hunger in MI, are supporting the effort.
