OTTAWA LAKE, MI (WTVB) – At the end of the first weekend of the MHSAA Football Playoffs, only one team from Branch County remains, after Bronson’s 22-16 loss at Ottawa Lake Whiteford in a Division 7 District Semifinal Saturday afternoon.
The Vikings scored on the game’s first drive, as Reid Stukey had a 3-yard TD run; the ensuing two-point conversion try was no good. Bronson scored again on the first play of the second quarter, as Owen Losinski tossed a 37-yard strike to Devin Stuart. Stukey ran in the 2-point conversion to put the Vikings up 14-0.
The Bobcats scored 16 unanswered points to take a 16-14 halftime lead, then added an insurance score in the third. Later in the quarter, Bronson’s Caleb Jones blocked a Whiteford punt attempt deep in their own territory; the Bobcats recovered in their end zone for a Viking safety. There was no scoring in the final quarter, as both defensive units dominated.
The loss ended Bronson’s season at 7-3. Whiteford improved to 8-2 and will travel to Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central next week in the District Final.
Friday night, Coldwater dropped a 42-34 decision at Thornapple Kellogg in Division 3, while Union City used two Trey McDonald touchdowns to defeat Detroit Community 16-6 in Division 7. Thanks to Jonesville’s 36-22 upset win at Hanover-Horton, the Chargers will host the Comets this week in a D7 District Final, with the date and time to be finalized by Monday.
