QUINCY, MI (WTVB) – The Quincy Community Schools Board of Education will hold a special meeting Monday night to consider the non-renewal of David Spalding’s contract as high school principal.
Spalding has been on administrative leave since last May when questions were raised about how he and former Superintendent Craig Artist handled sexual misconduct allegations against former teacher and Information Technology Director Jason Ferrell.
Ferrell eventually entered no contest pleas to two counts of third degree criminal sexual conduct for having an inappropriate relationship with a former female student. He was sentenced to serve up to 15 years in the Michigan Department of Corrections.
Spalding and Artist have been charged with a misdemeanor count of failure to report child abuse.
Artist retired last July. The Quincy Board of Education must take action on Spalding’s contract or else it automatically renews for the next school year. But his legal issue has not been determined yet and it maybe dragged out for several more months.
No trial date has been scheduled yet. Due to legal disagreements, an evidentiary hearing has been scheduled for May 16, 2018 in Branch County District Court.
After a hearing two weeks ago on a defense motion to dismiss which claimed several issues including the withholding of information by the prosecution, Branch County District Court Judge Brent Weigle took his decision on the Spalding and Artist cases under advisement.
