COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Trump administration issued a last-minute directive over the weekend, through U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to temporarily extend work authorizations for Haitian immigrants holding Temporary Protected Status (TPS) in Coldwater and across the country until July 24.
The 11th-hour administrative decision late Friday delays the immediate termination of employment documents by exactly two weeks, following a June Supreme Court ruling that gave the federal government total authority to cancel humanitarian protections for up to 1.3 million immigrants.
While immigrants from six other designated nations received only a one-week reprieve, Haitian beneficiaries were granted additional time as ongoing federal court challenges continue to play out.
The federal extension provides an immediate, albeit brief, sigh of relief for Haitian families and employers in Coldwater, who were facing abrupt job losses and deep legal uncertainty.
The work authorization for Haitian immigrants was set to end last Friday.
