STEUBEN COUNTY, IN (WTVB) – Two people were killed and one person was injured Thursday morning in a fiery accident on the Indiana Toll Road in eastern Steuben County near the Ohio State line. The accident involving a semi and a passenger car took place at around 10:20 a.m. about 12 miles east of the Angola exit.
Indiana State Police say according to a preliminary investigation, a 2016 Freightliner driven by 52-year-old Dawn Liggett of Mount Pleasant was travelling west when, for an unknown reason, it crossed the center median into oncoming eastbound traffic. The semi then collided with an eastbound passenger car. The Freightliner rolled over the car as both vehicles came to rest in a ditch and burst into flames.
The two occupants of the passenger car were pronounced dead at the scene. The fire caught the surrounding grass and field on fire as well.
Liggett was taken to Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne with non-life threatening injuries.
Vehicle information and the names of the deceased will be released once family notification is made.
