QUINCY, MI (WTVB) – The Humane Society of Branch County still has over a dozen dogs left from the more 200 animals that were seized around New Years from a Lenawee County woman. That woman was later charged with Animal Abandoning and Cruelty to ten or more animals which is a four year felony.
Lenawee County District Judge Jonathan L. Poer ordered last week that the owner forfeit the animals. They were turned over to a group of animal shelters in Branch, Hillsdale, Jackson, Lenawee and Monroe Counties.
Jan Nageldinger from the Humane Society of Branch County says they initially took in 29 of the dogs.
The dogs they still have are looking for new homes. Contact the Humane Society if you are interested.
The Lenawee County Sheriff’s Office says they got a complaint on December 19th which alleged a 53-year-old Sharon Evans was selling dogs that were being advertised as puppies and falsifying documentation.
In addition, the person who made the complaint believed the conditions at the residence were inhumane based upon the poor condition of the dog that she had purchased at the home.
Investigators with the help of several animal control agencies removed over 200 dogs, 32 horses, five cats and two peacocks due to what were called extremely poor conditions at the residence which included no shelter or water. Animal feces was also observed by investigators.
The extremely cold temperatures made the situation life threatening.
According to Sheriff’s records Evans was running a kennel and did have a valid kennel license allowing her to possess up to 75 dogs.
