COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Cardinals extended their winning streak to nine games and avenged their only loss of the season on Friday as they defeated the Marshall Redhawks 58-36 in front of a large contingent of Cardinal Crazies at the Floyd Eby Gymnasium. The Cardinals built a 24-17 halftime lead and gradually pulled away in the second half. Dylan Targgart led the Cardinals with 16 points and 10 rebounds while Gage McGuire had 12 points and Brady Beckhusen had 11 points. Spencer Rodesiler was the McDonalds Player of the Game. Jeremy Luciani led Marshall with 14 points. Coldwater is now 7-1 in the Interstate 8 and 10-1 overall. They remained tied for first place in the conference with Parma Western.

Last night in Big 8 Boys Basketball, Will Dunn led the Orioles with 14 points, 15 rebounds and three blocked shots as the Quincy Orioles defeated cross-county rival Union City 48-41. Bryce Ruhl had 13 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Grady Kever led the Chargers with 10 points. Quincy is now 7-3 overall and 5-1 in the Big 8. The Chargers drop to 3-7 overall and 1-6 in the Big 8.

Last night in Girls’ Basketball, it’s been awhile since Coldwater swept Marshall in a girls basketball season but this years squad accomplished the feat on Friday as they defeated the Rehawks 57-34. The Cardinals built a 35-20 halftime lead and cruised to the victory as they improved to 7-1 in the Interstate 8 and 13-1 overall. Tyler Scheid led Coldwater with 15 points and 14 rebounds while Carlee Crabtree had 11 points and Emilee Smoker had 10 points. Jamie Wellet was named our McDonald’s Player of the Game. Taylor Horn led Marshall with nine points. The Cardinals are still tied for first place in the I-8 with Jackson Northwest.

Union City drops to 5-9 overall and 1-7 in the Big 8.

The Bronson girls and boys varsity basketball games that were scheduled for Friday night at Homer were postponed due to the number of illnesses in the Bronson school district which forced the district to shut down on Friday. The girls game has been rescheduled for Monday, February 12th. The boys game will be held on Thursday, March 1st. Both games will be played at Homer. Game times will be 6:30pm.
