BUTLER TOWNSHIP, MI (WTVB) – Michigan State Police say they are continuing to investigate a traffic chase incident that began in Calhoun County and ended in Branch County with a suspect in custody and the recovery of a stolen vehicle.
Troopers say they were investigating leads on a wanted suspect regarding multiple felony warrants and that the suspect had been eluding police for over two weeks. According to State Police, they received a tip which lead to a pursuit late yesterday afternoon with the wanted suspect that extended from Calhoun County to Branch County.
Troopers say the suspect abandoned his vehicle in a tree line during the pursuit and then attempted to commit a robbery of an elderly woman, demanding her vehicle keys. The suspect then fled to another nearby residence and attempted to steal a van that was parked in the driveway when he was confronted by troopers. After a brief physical altercation, the suspect was placed in custody, reportedly at a location in Butler Township.
The vehicle the suspect was driving was recovered as stolen.
No further information will be released pending the arraignment of the suspect, who is being held in the Branch County Jail.
