BATTLE CREEK, MI (WTVB) – The Branch County Sheriff’s Department Dive Team was among dive teams from across West Michigan who took part in training Thursday in the fast moving Kalamazoo River in Battle Creek.
The dive teams had to recover items from a fictitious terrorist attack on the Battle Creek federal building. The drill involved a truck driving into the river and spilling all of its contents.
Allegan County Sheriff Sergeant Todd Wagner says they have to weigh themselves down to fight the quick currents.
The divers had to recover as many objects as possible from the water including a dummy that the swift current made difficult to pull ashore.
The emergency training practice was hosted by the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Department. It’s held in a different county every year so dive teams are always prepared for any scenario that comes their way.
