BRONSON, MI (WTVB) – The City of Bronson will no longer require a special land use permit for apartments above stores in the central business district.
The Bronson City Council approved a recommendation from the City’s Planning Commission Monday night to amend the codified ordinances.
First floor apartments will be prohibited in the district. Apartments above stores still must meet local, state and federal building property maintenance codes.
City Manager Brandon Mersman said the special land use permit has not been enforced historically and it’s also difficult to enforce as the spaces are often converted without notification to the city.
He said in his report to the City Council that apartments above stores are vital to the health of a downtown and provides additional affordable housing for a community.
