COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – It was a busy Sunday morning for Coldwater firefighters are they had to battle two fires that were reported within 90 minutes of each other.
Fire Marshall Steve Trall reports the first broke out at about 4:30 a.m. at 107 Belle Avenue when the homeowner found a fire at the back of the home after smoke alarms woke her up. She managed to knock down the fire with a garden hose and it was smoldering by the time firefighters arrived.
Crews quickly put out the rest of the fire. The cause is still under investigation. Damages were estimated at $2,000. No injuries were reported. Firefighters cleared the scene at about 5:30 a.m..
The second fire was reported at the Potawatomie Campground just a few minutes later at 5:53 a.m..
Trall reports a rodent nest in the air conditioner of a motorhome at 1117 Bell Road was the probable cause of the fire. He says the owner, who was identified as Glen Spears, tried to use a fire extinguisher on the fire before he got out. Crews found the fire was smoldering when they arrived and quickly put it out.
The fire caused about $1,500 in damage. Spears was taken to Bronson-Battle Creek Hospital by Life Care Ambulance due to difficulty in breathing. Firefighters were on the scene for about an hour.
