FREMONT, IN (WTVB)- A Virginia man was killed late Thursday morning in a three vehicle crash on the Indiana Toll Road about a half mile east of the Fremont exit which shut down the eastbound lanes until the middle of the afternoon.
The Indiana State Police says according to a preliminary investigation, a 2015 International box truck driven by 44 year old Shawn L. Alston of Chesterfield, Virginia was traveling west when for an unknown reason, his truck drove through the center median and into the eastbound lanes of traffic.
It was then hit by a tractor-trailer driven by 54 year old Derwin W. Patton of LaGrange, Indiana.
Because of that collision, another tractor-trailer driven by 31 year old Sardor Y. Hidirov of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, struck Patton’s vehicle.
Alston was pronounced dead at the scene by Steuben County Coroner Rodney Snyder.
Patton was taken Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne with non-life-threatening injuries. Hidirov was not injured. He and Patton were wearing their seatbelts at the time according to Troopers. It is unclear whether Alston was wearing his.
The crash forced a detour of eastbound traffic onto I-69. It remains under investigation.
