COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – It just might be worth the trip to fill up if you don’t mind supporting a neighboring state’s economy.
As of early Wednesday afternoon, there was a 40 cent difference in the price of gas between stations in the Coldwater area and stations just over the state line in Steuben County.
The web site www.gasbuddy.com reports that gas was selling for as much as $2.69 in Coldwater, while just a few miles south in Angola and Fremont, drivers are paying between $2.25 and $2.29 for a gallon of gas.
Some Michigan drivers reached the boiling point recently when Governor Whitmer proposed a 45 cent a gallon gas tax as a way to help fix the you-know-what roads as she had promised during her campaign.
State Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey says that is not going to happen, but he added the target number to fix the roads is about $2.5 billion, and they will achieve about half of that amount by the end of next year.
Shirkey says they will be adding another $400 million for Michigan roads on top of what they have already done the last two years.
A national research group called The Road Information Program, otherwise known as TRIP, has issued a study which showed the average Michigan driver is paying $646 a year in extra costs because of the condition the roads are in.
