FREMONT, IN (WTVB) – Four people were injured Sunday in a two vehicle crash south of Fremont in Steuben County.
The Indiana State Police says seat belts reduced the seriousness of the injuries for all four persons.
They say the accident took place at the intersection of State Road 827 and County Road 300 North at about 12:40 p.m. when a 2013 Volkswagen Passat was traveling west on 300 North at what appeared to be an excessively high rate of speed when it crested a hill, ran a stop sign and struck a northbound 2016 Ford Fusion in the right rear tire area.
It is believed the Volkswagen was passing another vehicle prior to the crash.
The rear axle of the Ford was torn from the vehicle and the entire engine of the Volkswagen was thrown more than 200 feet down the road.
The driver of the Volkswagen, 36-year-old Brandon G. Wooster of rural Angola, was pinned in his vehicle and had to be extricated by the Angola Fire Department. He was taken to Parkview Regional Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
Three Fremont residents were in the Ford. The driver, 25-year-old Ashton J. Davis, along with her passengers 27-year-old Harley M. Cleckner and five year old Alexander E. Cleckner were all taken to Parkview.
The trooper who investigated says drugs and alcohol were suspected as being contributing factors in this crash. Toxicology results are pending. A copy of the trooper’s investigation will be forwarded to the Steuben County Prosecutor’s Office.
