DETROIT, MI (WTVB) – Two Branch County high school wrestlers won state titles, while three others earned trips to the podium on Saturday at the Michigan High School Athletic Association Individual Wrestling Finals at Ford Field in downtown Detroit.
Union City’s Brayton Mears defeated Hudson’s Bronson Marry 4-2 in a sudden victory period to win the 103 pound title in Division Four. Also in D4, Bronson’s Ben Modert scored a 7-0 decision over Carson City Chrystal’s Nolan Datema to win his second straight 112 pound title.
Besides state titles for Modert and Mears, three other Branch County wrestlers won medals. Coldwater’s Griffin Olmstead was eighth at 171 pounds in Division Two. Union City’s Brayton Burgett was sixth at 285 pounds in Division Four. Also in Division Four, Bronson’s Isaac Tappenden was fourth at 152 pounds.
