KALAMAZOO, MI (WTVB) – Coldwater High School broke a 38-38 tie after three quarters of play by outscoring Gull Lake 17-10, and the Cardinals won their second straight MHSAA Boys Basketball District championship by beating the Blue Devils 55-48 in the championship game of the Division 1 District at Loy Norrix High School in Kalamazoo.
Gage McGuire, our McDonald’s Player of the Game, led all scorers with 20 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 blocks, while Dylan Targgart had 13 points and 3 board.
Coldwater improves to 17-5 and will face 20-2 Okemos Tuesday afternoon at 5:30pm in a Division 1 Regional Semifinal Game at Holt. It will be a rematch of last season’s Class A Regional Semifinal which the Chiefs won 67-46.
Okemos advanced by beating Lansing Everett 65-53 in the championship game of the Division 1 District it hosted.
In the Division 3 District Final at Bronson, the all-Branch County matchup was won by Union City, who edged the host Vikings 41-38. Larson Kever had a game-high 24 points and 7 rebounds as Union City claimed its first District championship in 17 years.
The Chargers improved to 16-7 and will face 21-1 Cassopolis Tuesday night at 7:45pm in the second game of a Division 3 Regional Semifinal twinbill at Watervliet. Cassopolis advanced with a 67-55 win against Centreville in the Marcellus District Final. Hudson Wotta had 14 for the Vikings, whose season ends at 3-19.
Quincy’s season came to an end at the hands of the Hanover-Horton Comets, who won their 17th district title in the past 18 years by knocking off the Orioles 77-42 in the championship game of the Division 3 Reading District. William Dunn had a game-high 20 points, 11 rebounds, and 2 blocks for the Orioles, who finish at 18-4.
