EAST LANSING, MI (WTVB) – Classifications for the 2020-2021 Michigan High School Athletic Association school year and postseason tournaments were announced on Monday.
The classifications are based on a second semester count date which for MHSAA purposes was on February 12.
For the first time since 1998, the football divisions have been determined before the season as the state tournament has undergone a format change. Postseason spots will now be determined on a computer formula based on wins and strength of schedule which replaces the old criteria of winning six games during the season.
Based on an enrollment of 947 students, Coldwater will be in Division Three for football.
Also for football, Quincy will be in Division Six with an enrollment of 388 while Union City and Bronson will both be in Division Seven. Bronson’s enrollment was at 326 while Union City had an enrollment of 289.
In the eight player football tournament, both Colon and Tekonsha will be in Division Two. Colon drops down after winning the Division One Eight Person state title last November. Colon had an enrollment of 152 and missed staying in Division One by two students.
Under the enrollment guidelines for 2020-2021, Coldwater would be a Class A school while Quincy, Bronson and Union City would be in Class C.
Harper Creek would be the only area school changing classes as they will move from Class A to Class B.
