READING TOWNSHIP, MI (WTVB) – An attorney representing the family of a man who was shot to death by a Hillsdale County Sheriff’s Department deputy in late April is demanding the County release the entire body cam footage of the incident.
In a Tuesday night press conference, Ian Fallon also requested that Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel take over the investigation which has been handled by Michigan State Police detectives.
In addition, relatives of 32-year-old Oscar Herrera want the Hillsdale County Sheriff’s Department to fire the deputy involved in the April 28 shooting.
Herrera and his dog were killed at a residence in the 6500 block of South Edon Road south of Reading.
The State Police said at the time the deputy, who has seven years of law enforcement experience, responded to a dog at large complaint.
When the deputy got to the residence, he was immediately attacked by the dog and bit. The deputy then shot and killed the dog.
State Police said an upset Herrera confronted the deputy with a knife. Herrera was then shot by the deputy and died from his injuries at the scene.
The deputy was treated at a local hospital for the dog bite injuries. The name of the deputy has not been released.
A final report will be turned into the Hillsdale County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
