COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A Union City man is facing two counts of being in possession of methamphetamine as well as a charge of allegedly receiving and concealing stolen property after he was arrested by the Michigan State Police on Tuesday during a traffic stop.
Troopers stopped a vehicle driven by 39-year-old David Robert Evans on U.S. 12 near Fiske Road which was pulling a trailer for an equipment violation. The troopers discovered that the 2004 Dodge Durango had allegedly been reported stolen from Steuben County, Indiana and that the license plate on the vehicle was improper.
Evans and a 36-year-old woman from Coldwater were detained during the investigation.
Troopers say the trailer did not have a valid registration and the VIN number had been intentionally covered up with paint. Troopers also report they discovered there were suspected methamphetamines inside of the Durango along with many keys and titles for other vehicles that were not in the names of the driver or passenger.
According to the State Police, one of those titles came back to a reported stolen vehicle from Emmett Township Police in 2020.
Numerous other items found inside of the vehicle were suspected of being stolen. The passenger was later released at the scene.
Evans was also charged with allegedly being in possession of meth when Coldwater Police and the State Police executed a search warrant at a residence in the 100 block of North Clay Street on March 11.
Evans was arraigned Wednesday in Branch County District Court. Bond was set at $25,000. A probable cause hearing was scheduled for June 15 with a preliminary exam on June 22.
