COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A Branch County Jail inmate who was charged with backing up a toilet and flooding several jail cells in the old jail last Christmas Eve was given two years of probation and a suspended nine month jail sentence on Monday in Branch County Circuit Court.
35-year-old Bradley Earl Burd of Homer entered a guilty plea on April 25 to an amended count of Attempted Malicious Destruction of a Building between $1,000 and $20,000.
The original charge was dismissed in exchange for the guilty plea. Burd would also have to pay restitution of just over $3,000 to cover the damages.
According to Branch County court documents, Burd was accused of flushing a jail issued bed sheet which led to the flooding of multiple cells.
Four of the cells had to be evacuated and an emergency call had to be made to Roto Rooter.
Plumbing specialists removed a bed sheet and several towels from the pipes. Maintenance staff had to be called in after hours to clean up the flooding.
