OVID TOWNSHIP, MI (WTVB) – Saying he “screwed up” over his handling of a controversial political sign on Pearl Road, Ovid Township Supervisor Greg Gemmill submitted his resignation this week.
Gemmill said he tendered his resignation in writing to the township office on Sunday.
Unless they hold a special meeting, the next time the Township Board is scheduled to meet and take formal action on the resignation would be on July 12.
A controversy developed in early May over the anti-President Joe Biden sign which also criticized those who voted for him.
Some in the community felt the sign should be removed because the language was offensive and profane. Property owner Chad Heuer, who is a supporter of former President Donald Trump, said the sign expressed his own personal opinion.
Gemmell said he holds no animosity towards anyone over his resignation and that he should have gone to the township board first when the complaints came in.
Instead, Gemmell admitted he made a mistake by going outside of his board to take this on himself and added he was disappointed in himself over what happened.
