DETROIT, MI (WTVB) – President Donald Trump is visiting Detroit today to deliver an economic address focusing on manufacturing and to boost Republican candidates ahead of the state’s upcoming primary elections.
The president is scheduled to land at Oakland County International Airport early this afternoon before traveling to General Motors’ Milford Proving Ground.
According to the White House, Trump will deliver remarks at 3:00 p.m. at the vehicle testing facility to spotlight his administration’s domestic manufacturing policies and efforts to rebuild the automotive sector.
The high-profile visit comes exactly eight days before Michigan’s August 4 primary elections, aligning with the start of early in-person voting.
Trump is expected to stump for his endorsed candidates, including U.S. Representative John James, who faces a competitive Republican gubernatorial primary against businessman Perry Johnson.
Trump’s visit also coincides with the official opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge between Detroit and Windsor, Ontario. A planned joint U.S.-Canada opening ceremony for the trade crossing was previously canceled amid heightened economic tensions following the administration’s imposition of a 50% tariff on various Canadian imports.
White House officials have not confirmed whether the president will visit the bridge site during his trip.
