EAST LANSING, MI (WTVB) – Branch County’s unemployment rate in May went back up by a half percent to five percent according to data released on Thursday by the Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget.
Branch County had the 17th lowest unemployment rate among the 83 Michigan counties.
As for neighboring counties, St. Joseph County jobless rate jumped up to 5-point-6 percent, Hillsdale County was at 5-point-5 percent and Calhoun County was at 6-point-8 percent.
The state says not seasonally adjusted unemployment rates increased in 14 of Michigan’s 17 major labor market areas in May.
Bureau of Labor Market Information and Strategic Initiatives Associate Director Wayne Rourke says, “Michigan regional jobless rate gains in May were often due to an increase in the number of persons active in the labor force. Payroll employment advanced in May in most metro areas.”
Unemployment rates ranged from 2-point-9 percent in Livingston County to nine percent in Oscoda County.
