UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – Long time Union City Community School employee Chris Katz is the district’s new Superintendent after the Board of Education approved a two year contract with him on a 7-0 vote Wednesday night.
Katz will receive an annual salary of $116,000 along with various benefits.
He had been a teacher in the district between 1985 and 1997. Katz was also the district’s Technology Director between 1994 and 2004 and its Chief Information Officer from 2004 to 2021.
Katz takes over the Superintendent’s office from Ronna Steel who has retired.
Katz was not the school board’s first choice last Wednesday night. They initially selected Choice Schools Chief Academic Officer Chris Ruiter on a 5-2 vote.
After Katz got strong support from audience members during over a half hour of public comments, two board members changed their votes and Katz was then offered the Superintendents position.
