COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Today is the big “count day” in Michigan schools, and the fall enrollment numbers taken on the first Wednesday in October every year counts 90% toward how much money the state sends to local districts for operations. There are actually two days connected to a very complex and rigorously regulated process that is much more complicated than taking a headcount during homeroom. Even after you have an official count day, there are months’ worth of audit checks associated with the procedure before you finally arrive at “the number”.
Most public school districts across Michigan are projecting another decline in students this year, but not in Coldwater, where the Board of Education last month heard that enrollment should be on the rise for the 2015-2016 school year.
