COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – In Branch County high school sports yesterday, it was a light schedule with only one event to report as the Coldwater Cardinals boys tennis team continued its strong season with an 8-0 non-conference win at home over Vicksburg. The Cardinals are ranked fifth in the state in Division 3 and last Friday won the Interstate 8 Conference Tournament Championship.
In yesterday’s regular season ending victory, the winners for Coldwater were Javier Perez-Marsa at first singles, Nathan Waterbury at second singles, Kumaran Arivoli at third singles, and Porter Skidmore at fourth singles. And winning at doubles were Nolan Duda and Austin Butler at first doubles, Kam Miller and Shane O’Grady at second doubles, Nick Galliers and Christian Pine at third doubles, and Evan Henry and Mitchell Duda at fourth doubles. On Thursday, Coldwater begins state tournament play at the Sturgis Division Three Regional.
The Coldwater boys JV tennis team won 5 – 3 against Vicksburg Monday. Winning for Coldwater were Andrew Gebbink at 2nd singles, Jacob Matevia at 3rd singles, as well as the 1st doubles team of Alec Keplinger and Blake Yates, 2nd doubles team of Hernan Ochoa Polanco and Sam Morrison, and 4th doubles team of Stuart Sobeske and William Reehl. The JV’s last match of the season is this afternoon against Bronson
Tonight in high school sports, in boys soccer, Coldwater has an Interstate-8 match at home against Charlotte. The varsity action on Senior Night is scheduled for 6:45 p.m.following the junior varsity game which begins at 5 p.m. Coldwater is ranked 11th in the state in this week’s Division Two Coaches poll, and awin tonight would clinch at least a share of the I-8 title.
In volleyball, it’s Dig Pink Cancer Awareness Night at Quincy with the Orioles hosting Union City. The evening will include a cancer survivor recognition ceremony, an auction, and a 50/50 raffle. The JV match starts at 6 p.m. with the varsity to follow. All proceeds will be donated to the CHC Cancer Center. Also in volleyball, Bronson plays at the Gull Lake Mini Tournament. Bronson again this week in ranked number-one in the state in Class C. In Cross Country, Quincy and Union City run at the Homer Jamboree. And in Girls swimming, it’s Coldwater at Jackson High.
Coldwater has moved up from ninth to eighth place in this week’s Michigan Associated Press High School football Division 3 poll. The 6-0 Cardinals cracked the top ten last week for the first time this season and then last Friday, qualified for the playoffs for the third year in-a-row with their first ever victory over Division 6 ninth-ranked Jackson Lumen Christi, beating the Titans 26-7. This week, Coldwater hits the road, playing Friday night at Harper Creek.
