HASTINGS, MI (WTVB) – West Michigan is filled with talented photographers, but learning to master a new camera can feel daunting. Between choosing the proper lens to use for each subject, balancing f-stops, apertures, and correct ISO, it’s no wonder so many rely on the “automatic” setting on their cameras. In an age when the answer to any question is only a Google search away, there is still something to be said for attending a workshop with one-on-one instruction, and getting out into nature for some fresh air and fresh inspiration can truly help to develop one’s photography skills. For those who wish to break out of auto mode and learn more about the features of their cameras, photographer Josh Haas will lead a hands-on workshop at Pierce Cedar Creek Institute on October 10.
Many photographers have the creativity, the drive, and the vision required of true artists, but lack the technical skills needed to master a complicated camera. “I recently bought a Nikon D3300 to enhance my photography. It’s my passion, but I feel overwhelmed with the features this camera has,” says Heidi Dieterman, aspiring photographer from Kalamazoo. “I would love to be more educated on how to work this awesome device!”
The workshop will begin on the trails at the Institute – the perfect backdrop for this nature photography shoot. Fall foliage will be in full swing, and photographers will have the chance to catch wildlife like deer, birds, frogs, and turtles as they prepare for the winter ahead. Haas will join participants in the field, providing coaching on composition, lighting, and answering technical questions. The class will break for lunch in the Institute’s dining room, and the afternoon will be spent indoors reviewing photos from the shoot. Photographers will receive an 8”x10” copy of one of their photos to take home at the end of the day to show off their skills!
Haas is a Michigan Birder and Co-Owner of Glances At Nature Photography. With years of experience in the field and leading courses and workshops all around the Midwest, he is the ideal instructor for this introductory course. His work can be seen in many Michigan publications, and he has a passion for sharing the world of photography with his participants.
“With today’s technology and photographic gear getting more within reach of the masses, there is a misconception that today’s cameras will fix all our problems. In reality, using these feature-rich cameras can be daunting and the results are not always what we had hoped for,” says Haas. “The photographer is still vital to taking over the camera and creating inspiring images. A workshop such as this will give budding photographers what they need to begin capturing some fantastic images.”
The nature trails and panoramic vistas at Pierce Cedar Creek Institute are a hotspot for more than the outdoors-y crowd. Artists flock to the Institute’s trails and scenic Brewster Lake for plein air painting, photography, and seeking inspiration of all kinds.
