DETROIT, MI (WTVB) – The Detroit Tigers plan to honor late Hall of Famer Al Kaline, but exactly when isn’t clear due to the coronavirus shutdown.
General Manager Al Avila says there will eventually be a public ceremony, most likely at Comerica Park. He says Kaline will be honored the way a man of his stature should be.
Kaline, one of the most beloved and distinguished players of his era who spent his entire 22-year Major League Baseball career with the Detroit Tigers, died Monday. He was 85.
Known affectionately as “Mr. Tiger,” Kaline was one of the most consistent players and retired not long after he became only the 12th player to reach MLB’s elite 3,000-hit club.
Kaline, beloved by generations of fans, spent 26 seasons after his retirement providing color commentary for the team’s TV broadcasts and the last 18 years in the front office as a special assistant and adviser to the club’s senior management.
