Stephen Lee Newland, 67, of Clarendon Township, passed away Thursday, May 21, 2020 at Ascension Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. A public visitation will be held from 2:00-6:00 PM on Sunday, May 24, 2020 at Lighthouse of Tekonsha, 616 N. Main Street, with the number of people allowed inside at any one time limited in accordance with the established COVID-19 guidelines for public gatherings. The family is being served by Lighthouse Funeral & Cremation of Union City.
Steve was born December 26, 1952 in Coldwater, MI to Lloyd and Margaret (Garn) Newland. He attended Tekonsha Community Schools and lived in the Tekonsha area all of his life. On September 25, 2000, he married the former Cynthia “Cindy” Wilson in Fremont IN.
Steve was employed by Rennco as a CNC Programmer and a machinist.
Steve loved to hunt turkey and deer and also fish for salmon and steelhead. At one time he was a member of the NRA. He enjoyed being outdoors for any reason, from doing yardwork to helping with cleanup of the St. Joe River. He loved watching the family swim in the pool and was the one who taught his children and grandchildren to swim. Steve was a diehard fan of U of M basketball and football. He would always stop in for coffee at the Tekonsha Café.
Steve is survived by his wife, Cindy; his children, Brenda Brown of Coldwater, Jami Newland of Union City, Lonnie (Jessica) Newland of Marshall, Lori Thenen of Sheboygan and Brad Thenen of Coldwater; his grandchildren, Collin, Onalise, Noah, Holden, Sydney, Quentin, Korrin, Carson, Lillian, Chad, Kyleigh and Gavin; his nieces and nephews, Kim, Jen, Andrea and Brian; and his siblings, Gary (Kay) Newland, Alice (Stephen) Cavinder and Linda (Tom) Hampton, all of Tekonsha.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a nephew, Scott Hampton.
