UNDATED (WTVB) – In high school sports Friday, Coldwater played its second girls golf tournament of the season and came away with a 9th place finish out of 17 teams at the Western Invitational, held at the Arbor Hills Golf Course in Jackson. Coldwater came in with a score of 431, while Okemos won the event with a team score of 338. Leading the way for the Lady Cards was Haley Linton with a 96, followed by Madison Donbrock with a 108, Jayla Goodwin 112, Claire Sheppard 115, and Gabby Boston 120.
In boys soccer, Quincy opened its season with a 5-0 loss at Comstock, spoiling the debut of new Oriole head coach Nick Warner. Warner, a recent graduate of Spring Arbor University, succeeds Tim Hart, who was the program’s first coach.
In freshman volleyball, Coldwater went 6-0 to win the season-opening Comstock Invitational, beating Wayland Union 2 games to 0 in the championship match. The Lady Cards advanced by beating Otsego, Portage Northern, and Thornapple Kellogg in pool play and defeating the host school and Stevensville Lakeshore in bracket play. Leading the team were Mya Tom with 14 kills, Anna Tappenden with 12 assists, Valerie Kissenger with 13 digs and 13 aces, and Jordan Clemens with 9 kills, 7 blocks, and 13 aces.
On today’s schedule, the volleyball season begins for county teams with Coldwater, Quincy, and Union City at the Battle Creek YMCA for the Carrie Adams Memorial Invitational hosted by St. Philip Catholic Central, while Bronson starts out at home with the Bronson Invitational. In boys soccer, Coldwater begins its season at the Portage Soccer Complex in the Justin Bailey Shootout, facing Mattawan at 11am and Portage Northern at 2pm. And in cross country, it’s opening day for Bronson and Union City as they run at the Colon Invitational.
