BRONSON, MI (WTVB) – In Branch County high school sports, the Bronson Lady Vikings are Regional softball champions while season ending losses were suffered on Saturday in baseball and softball by Coldwater and Quincy in the state tournament regionals. Bronson’s title at the Lansing Catholic Regional sends them to the Division Three quarterfinals to face Grand Rapids West Catholic tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. at Davenport University.
Bronson’s softball title in Lansing included a 2-0 win over Quincy in the semifinals. Skyler Sobeski earned the victory on a 3-hitter with 13 strikeouts. Kinslea Blouin had a single and a double while Hannah Hoover had an RBI with a triple. And Sobeski had a 2-hitter in the 10-0 championship clinching 6-inning win over Lansing Catholic. Blouin went 4-4 with a home run, a double and 2 singles with 6 RBI’s. Bronson improved its record to 35-7.
Coldwater’s baseball and softball teams played at the Edwardsburg Division Two Regional. In baseball, the Cardinals lost 4-1 to Stevensville-Lakeshore in the semifinals. The score was tied at 1-1 when Lakeshore broke through with 3 runs in the top of the sixth inning. Jordan Butler took the loss for Coldwater. 3 of the Lancer’s runs were unearned with 3 errors for the Cardinals, who were limited to 4 hits in the defeat. Austin Krzeminski had a single and also had the lone RBI for Coldwater, which finished with a 32-9 record. Lakeshore lost to Vicksburg 2-1 in the title game.
The Coldwater softball team fell in the semifinals 10-0 in five innings to St. Joseph, which went on to capture the regional championship. The Lady Cardinals were held to one hit with Darlene Horn taking the loss on the mound. Coldwater’s final record was 29-8.
Quincy’s baseball team opened play on Saturday in Lansing with a 5-4 win over Parchment in the semifinals. Tyler Powell picked up the victory, scattering seven hits over seven innings with 6 strikeouts. Bryce McCavit had 2 RBI’s with one of the Orioles six hits. In the title game, host Lansing Catholic beat Quincy 11-2. Jake Rider suffered the loss. Hunter Haylett had 2 doubles.
In boys golf, Coldwater came away with a top ten finish in the MHSAA Division Two State Finals which wrapped up Saturday at Michigan State University’s Forest Akers East golf course. After an opening round score of 313 on Friday, the Cardinals shot a 320 on Saturday to place ninth in the field of 15 teams. DeWitt took first place. Cam Ruge led Coldwater on Saturday with a 76, Keagan Dwyer and Stephen Boston each had an 81, Nathan Waterbury shot an 82 and Nolan Duda rounded out the scoring with an 83.
