COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – In Branch County high school sports, Coldwater yesterday clinched the Interstate Eight Conference softball title with a 9-2 win at home over Harper Creek. Stacy Guzy picked up the victory, which wrapped up a doubleheader that was postponed two weeks ago. Guzy pitched a complete game 6-hitter with 4 strikeouts and one walk. Payton Watson had a single with 2 RBI’s while Jamie Wellet, Darlene Horn, Gabby Milnes and Katie Stanton each singled and had one RBI apiece. The Lady Cardinals finished 12-2 in the I-8 and improved their overall record to 23-7.
In the JV game at Harper Creek, the Beavers beat Coldwater 7-6. Avery Milnes had a double and a single and 3 RBI’s.
Yesterday in baseball, Coldwater’s Interstate 8 champion Cardinals beat visiting Harper Creek 5-4. Brandon Lewis picked up the win with 4 innings of relief while Randall Linton earned the save with a scoreless seventh inning. Brendan Spangler had 2 of Coldwater’s six hits with a pair of doubles and 3 RBI’s. The Cardinal’s closed out play in the I-8 with an 11-3 record and improved to 25-7 overall.
Coldwater won the JV game at Harper Creek with a 3-hitter and 12 strikeouts for Kameron Miller. Collin Torrey and Austin Butler each had 2 hits and 2 RBI’s.
Bronson was a winner yesterday at Union City with the Vikings beating the Chargers 11-2. Daniel McMichael went the distance for the victory with 6-hitter and 13 strikeouts. Thadd Herman had 3 hits and 4 RBI’s while Noah Roberts also had 3 hits along with 2 RBI’s. Kenyon Stuchell took the loss. Elijah Way had 2 hits and Blade Gordon had a hit with 2 RBI’s. The defeat dropped Union City to 15-17 while the Vikings improved to 12-19.
Wednesday in girls soccer, Coldwater captured the Silver Division title of the Interstate 8 tournament, beating host Jackson Northwest 1-0. The win improved the Lady Cardinals record to 11-7-2, breaking the school record for wins in a season. They finished 4-5 in I-8 play. Allison Germann scored the lone goal of the match with about 29 minutes to play in the first half, assisted by Mackenzie McGuire. Shelby Bowers made 5 saves in goal for her 10th shutout of the season as Coldwater outshot Northwest 13-10. The Lady Cardinals open district play Tuesday at Eaton Rapids.
The Coldwater JV team closed out its season with a 2-0 win at Jackson Northwest. Jasmine Renshaw and Carlee Larimer each had a goal, while Mariah Johnson and Meagan Taylor picked up the assists. Nadia Kiersey made 10 saves in goal.
Yesterday in track, Quincy hosted the Big 8 Conference meet. In the Boys action, Quincy was sixth and Union City fourth while Concord finished first and they also won the Girls meet with Quincy fifth and Union City in sixth place. In the Boys meet, Union City’s Aaron Watson won the 100 and 200 meter dashes and Union City also took first place in the 400 and 16-hundred meter relays. In the Girls meet, Quincy’s Kayti Hawkins finished first in the discus.
Also in track, Bronson’s boys and girls teams each finished fourth in the BCS Invitational at Niles-Brandywine. Eric Toledo won the Boys shot put and discus.
In boy’s golf, the Coldwater JV team traveled to the Riverview Golf Course in Battle Creek to take part in a Jamboree hosted by Lakeview and the Cardinals came away with a 2nd place finish behind the host Spartans. Coldwater shot a team score of 194 to Lakeview’s 191. The Cardinals were led by Jacob Fair who shot a 45, Tanner Bowers had a 47, Collin Outwater shot 49, Brendan Hanna had a 53, Cole Targgart had a 54 and Dillon Gagnon rounded out Coldwater’s scoring with a 65.
Today in high school sports, in baseball and softball, Coldwater plays at Battle Creek Lakeview while in baseball only, it’s Quincy at Bronson. And the boys golf state tournament tees off today for Coldwater as they play in the Division 2 District at Arbor Hills Golf Club hosted by Parma Western while Bronson hosts a Division 4 District, including Union City, at the Bella Vista Golf Course.

In middle school sports yesterday, in co-ed tennis, the Coldwater B team lost 5-3 at Sturgis. Picking up wins for the Cardinals were Stuart Sobesky and Ben Kinsey at first and fourth singles along with the 4th doubles team of Brynn Niedzwiecki and Lanoe Henderson.
