COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – In high school baseball Thursday, Coldwater junior Brandon Lewis threw a no-hitter in the Cardinal’s 1-0 home victory over Parchment in the nightcap of a doubleheader which also had a 1-0 score in Parchment’s win in the opener of the twin bill at Lowe Field. The gem by Lewis was the first no-hitter in Coldwater varsity baseball since 1996 when Jesse Modert turned the trick 19 years ago.
Lewis had 6 strikeouts with one walk while the Cardinals pushed across their run in the bottom of the sixth when Austin Krzeminski had a lead-off double and then came home after stealing third followed by a Parchment error. The drama escalated in the top of the seventh when the first batter Lewis faced smacked a line drive down the right field line that looked good for extra bases but Nick Shaw made a great lunging catch to preserve the no-hitter. Then for good measure, Lewis fanned the final two hitters to complete the eighth no-hitter in school history and was the obvious choice to be named our McDonald’s Player of the Game for Coldwater.
In the Cardinal’s loss in the first game, Marty Johnson, the second of 3 Coldwater pitchers, suffered the defeat after allowing the only 3 hits managed by Parchment. The Cardinal’s seven hits included 3 by Jordan Butler, who was our McDonald’s Player of the Game in the opener. The non-conference split left Coldwater’s record at 13-5.
