COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – In Branch County high school sports, there were quite a few events postponed yesterday, including all of the Coldwater schedule, because of the very windy and cool conditions, but there were some games played in spite of the less than ideal weather.
In baseball, Quincy split a Big 8 doubleheader at home with Jonesville. The Orioles fell to Jonesville 3-2 in the opener. Tyler Powell suffered the loss, going the distance on a 6-hitter with 8 strikeouts over the seven innings. Bryce McCavit had 2 of Quincy’s five hits. The Orioles came back strong in the nightcap with a 15-1, six inning victory over the Comets. Quincy blew the game open in the sixth when they scored 10 runs. Jake Rider picked up the win, allowing just one hit with 8 strikeouts in five innings of work. Rider helped his own cause with 3 hits and 3 RBI’s. Kalen Stahl added two hits with 2 RBI’s while Jake Jodway had a home run with 2 RBI’s and scored 3 runs. The Orioles are now 2-2 in the conference with their overall record at 7-5.
Also in baseball, in a doubleheader at Union City, the Chargers beat Athens 9-4 in the first game while the nightcap was suspended in the top of the sixth with Union City leading 14-4. Seth Bruce earned the win in the opener with nine strikeouts over six innings. Kenyon Stuchell and Darren Austin each had 2 singles and 2 RBI’s. In the second game, Stuchell had a triple, two doubles, and a single. The Chargers are 1-2 in in the Big 8 and 3-7 overall.
In softball, Union City swept a doubleheader at home over Athens 21-4 and 14-6. Marissa Mead earned both wins on the mound. In the 4-inning opener, Hailey Rivard had 3 hits, including a homer and a double with 4 RBI’s. Skyler Herman and Haley Harty also homered for the Chargers. In game two, Harty added a triple and two doubles with 2 RBI’s while Riley Smith had 2 hits, including a home run, with 3 RBI’s.
Today in high school sports, in girls soccer, Coldwater plays its Interstate Eight Conference opener at home against Marshall with the varsity match at around 6:45 p.m following the JV game which kicks off at 5 p.m. In track, it’s Quincy at Reading while Union City hosts Jonesville. And in boys golf, Coldwater competes in an Interstate Eight Jamboree hosted by Jackson Lumen Christi.
