COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Coldwater swept a doubleheader from defending Interstate 8 champion Marshall Tuesday night at Lowe Field, winning by scores of 5-3 and 4-2.
In the opener, the Cardinals got all their runs in the first inning, aided by three Redhawk errors, and held off a 3-run rally in the sixth off starting pitcher Cam Heinemann. He got the win, allowing 7 hits and 2 walks while striking out 6 in five-plus innings of work. Joe Closson got the save, allowing just 1 hit with 4 strikeouts. Brynden Massey went 3-for-3, while Closson and Logan Farmer got the other Coldwater hits.
In the nightcap, the Cardinals trailed 1-0 before scoring 3 runs in the third. They added an insurance run in the 5th. Pitching was the story again, as winning pitcher Nate Tappenden allowed 2 runs on 1 hit with 2 walks and 4 strikeouts over five innings, and Joe Closson struck out 3 while not allowing a hit or a walk to pick up his second consecutive save. Logan Farmer and Brynden Massey each doubled, and Brock Thornton had two hits.
Coldwater improved to 6-1 overall, 4-0 in the Interstate 8, and will host Jonesville on Thursday.
