COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Seven wrestlers from Branch County, including five from Bronson, have advanced to the state finals coming up March 5-7 at the Palace of Auburn Hills. At the Division 4 Regional at Manchester, Wes Disbro finished 4th at 125 pounds, Kahle Scheenks finished 2nd at 135 pounds, Jukota Sexton finished 3rd and Brett Burtrum 4th at 171 pounds, and Nathan Caudill finished 3rd at 215 pounds to advance to the final weekend of the season.
At the Division 2 regional at Eaton Rapids, Coldwater’s Jesse Miller at 152 pounds and Zach Chehowski at 160 pounds both advanced to the individual State Finals. No schools from Branch County advanced to the Team State Finals, which will be held this weekend at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek.
On tonight’s high school schedule, there’s make-up basketball action for the Coldwater boys and girls freshman and junior varsity basketball teams against Jackson Northwest, with the girls at home and the boys on the road. The Coldwater gymnastics teams will host Mason.
In middle school sports, Bronson’s wrestlers traveled to Portage Northern Saturday for an Invite. Winning championships were Ashton Mayer, JC DePaz and Ruger Ranney. Evan Swift, Joshua Laser and Alex Tyre ended the day with 2nd place finishes. Bryce Bucklin finished with a 3rd place while Hunter Roussey finished in 4th place.
The Union City girls 8th grade team lost in the Big Eight tournament championship game to Homer 31-18. Autumn Carpenter had 15 points and 6 rebounds as the team finished witha 6-6 record.
