COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – In Branch County high school sports, 14 wrestlers from the county have qualified for the state regionals after placing in the top four at Saturday’s MHSAA Individual Districts. In Division Two at Vicksburg, Coldwater had four advance in the tournament led by Sam DeMeester with a third place showing while placing fourth in their weight divisions were were Josh Powers, Jesse Miller, and Zach Chehowski.
In the Bronson Division 4 District, the host Vikings had 7 earn a trip to the regionals with 2 from Union City and 1 from Quincy. There were two district champions from Bronson with Kahle Scheenks at 135 pounds and Brett Burtrum at 171 pounds. Placing second for the Vikings were Nathan Caudill and Jukoada Sexton. David Erwin placed third and placing fourth were Chase Gibson and Wesley Disbro. Moving on from Union City were Jacob Todd with a third place showing and Colton Johns, who placed fourth. And Quincy was led by a fourth place finish for Jared Brown.
The Division 2 Individual Regional for the Coldwater qualifiers is Saturday at Eaton Rapids while in Division 4, the Regional is at Manchester. The team regionals are this week on Wednesday including in Division 4 at Bronson, the only Branch County school to win a District title last week.
In gymnastics, Coldwater finished in a fourth place tie Saturday out of 6 schools that competed in the South Central Gymnastics League Conference Championships at Saline. The Lady Cardinals posted their highest team score of the season at the meet with 124.675 points. Senior Jenny Daoud finished in the top 10 to be named to the All-Conference team. Daoud and two teammates were named to the Academic All-Conference Team. Sophomore Sarah Odom was first in the conference for academics, Daoud was second, and junior Madison Hedstrom finished fourth. The competition for Coldwater Saturday started on the vault and they earned 5 qualifying scores. Jenny Daoud tied for 7th in the meet with a score of 8.6 and then next on the uneven bars, she again led the team with a 13th place finish. Three others also posted individual qualifier scores. It was the same showing for Daoud on the balance beam, placing 13th, and again, there were 4 individual qualifiers. The floor exercise was the Lady Cardinal’s final event with 4 individual qualifiers. Coldwater had 3 in the top 15 in the all-around competition for the conference championship. Jenny Daoud was named All-Conference with her 7th place finish. Amanda Daoud finished 11th and Sarah Hughes placed 14th.
Today in high school sports, just one event on the schedule and it’s bowling with Coldwater travelling this afternoon to take on Jackson Lumen Christi at Airport Lanes. Today on the Coaches Corner, it’s Coldwater Boys basketball with junior varsity coach Quinn Berry, who was the bench last Friday night at Jackson Northwest while acting head coach Casey Adams was away on family business.
In middle school sports, in wrestling, Coldwater hosted five teams for a tournament on Saturday at CHS and Coldwater came in first place, with Harper Creek second and Marshall third.
