COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Branch County Board of Commissioners decided during their work session on Thursday to bring forward a request to close the Courthouse annually in observance of Juneteenth which is observed on June 19.
Since Juneteenth falls on a Sunday this year, the legal holiday will be observed on Monday, June 20.
The Michigan Supreme Court has entered an order adding Juneteenth as an official court holiday.
It conforms with the federal policy, making Juneteenth a legal holiday.
County Administrator Bud Norman said with the majority of the offices in the Courthouse being affiliated with the courts, it was being recommended the Courthouse be closed annually in observance of this new legal holiday.
Formal action is scheduled for next Tuesday.
