COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Lady Cardinals opened their girls basketball season with a 66-38 home court win over Portage Central Tuesday night.
Coldwater controlled the game after falling behind 12-11 after the first quarter. A 16-6 second quarter gave Coldwater a 27-18 halftime lead. Coldwater outscored Portage Central 39-20 in the second half.
The Mustangs only scored four points in the final quarter and were forced into 28 turnovers. Coldwater held a 46-29 advantage on the glass, giving up only seven offensive rebounds.
Two freshman led the scoring attack with Olivia Foley scoring 12 points along with five steals. Carlee Crabtee added 11 points along with eight assists and seven rebounds. Sophomore Tyler Scheid was our McDonald’s Player of the Game as she notched a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Malorie Rzepka had nine points and four steals.
Coldwater also won the J.V. game over Portage Central 47-19. Jayda Kelly led Coldwater with 12 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Kelsi Herlan added nine points. Autumn Sunderland and Faith Herendeen both had five rebounds. Valy Yaldo led the team in steals with seven and assists with four.
The Coldwater girls play at Battle Creek Lakeview next Tuesday night.
Union City 46, Colon 30
Union City also opened their season with a home court win as they defeated Colon 46-30. Autumn Carpenter led the Chargers with 18 points and nine rebounds. Allison Adams had eight points and 13 rebounds while Sydney Falkner scored 11 points. Union City’s young team managed to take care of the ball as they only committed 12 turnovers.
