JAMESTOWN TOWNSHIP, IN (WTVB) – Two rural Fremont, Indiana residents were seriously injured Thursday night in a motorcycle crash on State Road 120 near the I-69 overpass in Steuben County.
The Steuben County Sheriff’s Department says their initial crash scene investigation indicated that a 2010 Harley-Davidson Electra Glide motorcycle driven by 45-year-old Benner L. Merrick was traveling east on 120 from State Road 127 at about 8:30 p.m. when Merrick lost control of the motorcycle possibly due to a tire malfunction.
The motorcycle then went down on its side causing Merrick and his rear seat passenger, 35-year-old Deann J. Bond, to be thrown off.
Deputies say neither Merrick nor Bond were wearing helmets at the time of the crash and both suffered head injuries.
They were transported to a Fort Wayne area hospital in serious condition by Steuben County EMS.
The crash remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Department with assistance from the Indiana State Police.
Assisting at the scene were Fremont Police, the Fremont Fire Department, Steuben County EMS, the Law Enforcement Division of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and the Indiana State Police.
