COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Following a lengthy discussion, the Coldwater Zoning Board of Appeals approved a variance request on Wednesday night by the Red Roof Inn on South Willowbrook Road.
The hotel was seeking a 58 foot zoning variance to install façade and monument signage totaling 258 square feet.
The zoning ordinance limits commercial signage to no more than 200 square feet per parcel.
Harvee Holdings requested the additional 58 square feet of signage to comply with their design standards and to adequately identify the property to potential customers.
In his report to the Z.B.A., Assistant City Manager Keith Baker said the owner of the hotel was required by the corporate office to update the signage.
While the petitioner offered to reduce the signage area on the property, the city staff wrote in their report that while a marginal reduction in signage will be achieved, they felt granting this variance undermines the intent of the code for standardizing and reducing the overall size of commercial signage in the City of Coldwater.
