KENOWA HILLS, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater High School Gymnastics team finished eighth out of 13 teams at the MHSAA Gymnastics Regional meet at Kenowa Hills on Saturday but two Coldwater gymnasts advanced as individuals to the State Finals.
The Cardinals posted a solid 123.425 as a team, a Regional qualifying mark.
Coach Kim Nichols said, “We were very happy with the team results, especially because in this meet you are limited to only five competitors in each event. We were also down one of our top scorers due to injury. Knowing that going in, I decided to spread out the effort and get each of the girls in at least one event. In each event we were competing with three, first year gymnasts alongside our two veterans. That tells you just how much of a team effort this truly was and shows how far they’ve come this year.”
In order to move on from Regionals a gymnast must finish in the top eight for each individual event or in the top six and the all around. The gymnasts are divided into Division 1 (D1) or Division 2(D2) based on their experience level in competition.
Charlotte Calhoun made school history when she claimed the Regional Title on the uneven bars for the second straight year. This is a feat that has never been accomplished before by any Cardinal gymnast.

Calhoun will perform in all four events at the finals after finishing fifth in the all-around. Randi Dudek will join her teammate in three events at the post-season finale. She finished in the top eight for the bars, beam, and floor exercise. It is Dudek’s third trip to the Finals for Gymnastics.
Calhoun finished fourth on the vault in Division Two out of a field of 86 competitors. Dudek was eighth.
Calhoun dominated the uneven bars with a personal best score of 9.325 while Dudek earned a season best mark of 8.45 to finish in fourth place for Division 1.
Dudek was seventh in Division One on the balance beam.
Calhoun finished just outside of the podium in the D2 floor exercise competition while Dudek finished in 7th place in Division 1.
In the All-Around standings, Calhoun tallied a total of 35.625 points and finished on the podium in fifth overall in D2. Dudek collected a total of 32.975 points and finished just outside of the standings in D1 (7th).
The MHSAA State Finals will be hosted by White Lake Lakeland High School on Friday and Saturday of this week. Team Finals will be held on Friday and the individual competition will take place on Saturday. The Cardinal gymnasts will compete in the Individual Finals on Saturday starting at noon.
