COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The 2015-2016 high school sports season ended for Branch County teams on Saturday as Coldwater’s Boys Golf team finished in the top ten at the MHSAA Division Two State Finals while baseball and girls softball teams from Coldwater and Bronson were eliminated in the regionals.
—BOYS GOLF—
Coldwater finished ninth at the state finals hosted by Bedford Valley Golf Club in Battle Creek with a two day total of 630. They followed up Friday’s round of 314 with a 316 on Saturday. Cam Ruge had a second straight round of 77 while Nolan Duda and Nick Galliers both had rounds of 79. Nathan Waterbury fired an 81 while Keagan Dwyer carded an 85.
St. Johns won the team championship with a score of 597 which was good enough for a four shot win over East Lansing.
—BASEBALL—
Coldwater was held to just four hits on Saturday as they were beaten by Niles 5-1 in the Division Two regional semifinals at Stevensville-Lakeshore. The Cardinals got a run in the first but Niles tied it in the second and scored three times in the third to take the lead for good. Collin Torrey collected the only RBI for Coldwater as the Cardinals finished 31-10 and earned the number one ranking in Division Two by the State High School Baseball Coaches Association. Niles went on to defeat Sturgis 12-1 for the regional title.
Bronson advanced to the Division Three Regional title game at Leslie with a 2-0 victory in nine innings over Ovid-Elsie but lost 8-7 in eight innings to Jackson Lumen Christi in the championship game. Ethan Cossairt went the first six innings while Daniel McMichael went the last three to get the win in the semifinals. Cossairt and McMichael combined on a two hit shutout as Bronson won its 30th game of the season.
Bronson led 6-0 in the fourth inning against Lumen Christi before things fell apart. Lumen got back into the game with a four run fourth and cut the lead to 6-5 in the sixth. After Bronson got an insurance run in the seventh, Lumen tied the game with two in the last of the seventh and scored in the last of the eighth to win the regional title. Noah Roberts had three hits and two RBI’s for the Vikings against Lumen Christi. Brendan Bell also drove in two runs.
—GIRLS SOFTBALL—
Coldwater defeated the sixth ranked Edwardsburg Eddies 8-4 in the semifinals of the Division Two Regionals at Stevensville-Lakeshore but lost in the finals to second-ranked Vicksburg 10-0 as they were limited to three hits. Tyler Scheid was the winning pitcher against Edwardsburg. Kendall Galloway, Jamie Wellet and Scheid all had two hits. Coldwater finished the season with a record of 31-7.
Bronson defeated Laingsburg 6-2 but lost to Webberville 2-1 at the Division Three Regionals at Leslie. Adyson Lasky was the winning pitcher in the semifinals. Allie Sikorski had two doubles and four RBI’s for the Vikings while Lasky drove in two runs. Bronson was held hitless byWebberville in finals. They finished with a record of 25-15.
