Kenneth Milburn Eyre was born on July 6, 1942 in Battle Creek, Michigan to Blaine M. and Gladys (Wank) Eyre. He was raised in East Leroy and graduated from Athens High School in 1960. He married the former Mary G. Hamilton on February 19, 1966 in Marshall. The couple made their home in Ceresco for several years before moving to the farm in Burlington Township in 1973. This year was their 50th year on their family farm and their 57th year of marriage.
Farming was Ken’s favorite pastime. He loved tending to his cattle and took great pride in his alfalfa fields. When he wasn’t farming, Ken worked for Eaton’s in Battle Creek, Waldorf/Rock Ten Paper Co. in Battle Creek and as a young man he had completed an electrical apprenticeship at Grand Trunk Railroad.
Family and community was important to Ken as well. He served as President of the Union City Athletics Boosters for many years while his kids were in school, back when BINGO nights were popular. He loved to watch his children and grandchildren compete in sporting events through the years. He was still cheering them on just weeks before his passing. Those were some of Ken’s favorite times.
Ken could be quiet and reserved at times, but he really enjoyed sharing about the things he loved with others. These topics centered around cats, hay and cows. He truly loved his animals and took great care of them. He was a great steward of the land that he was blessed to call home for so many years and was proud of the family he and Mary had created and raised together.
Mr. Eyre is survived by his wife Mary Eyre, his sons Keith Eyre of Ceresco, Douglas and Nicole Eyre of Northville, Jeff Eyre of Athens, Mike and Lisa Eyre of Burlington, his siblings, Ron Eyre of Chicago, Illinois and Patricia Harvath of East Leroy, and his grandchildren, Libby Eyre, Blaine Eyre, Lilly Eyre and Emme Eyre. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gladys Mahnke and Blaine Eyre, his step-father, Alvin Mahnke, and his brother, Norman Eyre.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Union City Booster Club, 430 St. Joseph Street, Union City, MI 49094.
