UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – The Union City School Board approved a contract with Performance Services Incorporated of Kalamazoo for the Alumni Field bleacher project on Monday night after the company made several concessions to the district.
Company representatives got an earful from Superintendent Chris Katz and angry school board members during a special meeting on May 1 after it was found out a P.S.I. construction manager gave an inaccurate timeline when he said the work would take just over three months and would be done by the time of first home football game in late August.
But because of the type of work that needs to be done and the terrain of Alumni Field, there are indications the project won’t be finished until after the season is over.
Katz told the school board on Monday night P.S.I. will be assuming about $150,000 worth of costs.
Katz was against re-bidding the project because of the likelihood of increased costs. He also said on Monday that P.S.I. was not totally off the hook.
P.S.I Vice President Mark Titus apologized to the board two weeks ago said this was not who they are.
Temporary bleachers and restrooms will be brought in for the Union City home football games this fall.
The Chargers open the season August 24 against Centreville as they will play their first four games at home.
If all of the permits are approved by the State of Michigan, it’s hoped work can begin on June 1.
Union City Community School District voters approved a sinking fund millage renewal proposal in August of 2021 which provided a portion of the funding for the replacement of the bleachers as well as for other projects in the district.
